This variety has a great story and legacy. The variety originates from Italy and was sold by the historic Belleclare Nursery. This was one of the original nurseries introducing figs into mainstream America., it is no longer in existence. The tree appeared in the popular Martha Stewart's program. The mother tree had an unusual weeping shape hence the name “Sport”. The weeping shape does not appear persistent. The leaves of the tree are very ornamental and large with well-defined fingers. The figs are large and have a beautiful bronze hue. The ostiole is close. The flavor of the figs is fantastic. They are very juicy with sweet light berry notes. Typically, large figs lack deep flavors and sweetness. However, this fig has a recognizable sweetness and very delightful taste. Figs start to ripen in mid-August. Drooping and crack formation are the key signs of ripeness. We have this variety in our top 5 list for 2024.
